One of my all time favourite hymns is “Count your Blessings.” The refrain in that hymns goes like this.
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.
In life that is exactly what we need to do. Count our many blessings even when we go through a tough time in life. Troubles, trials, and temptations all come our way, but it’s up to us to be happy with life’s blessings endowed upon us by God. In life when we go through a rough patch our first instinct is to say, “Oh God I am so unhappy and wonder where you are as everything seems to be going wrong in my life.” We are very quick to point the finger at God and say he is not there when we really need him. We stoop to the extent of saying God has forgotten us and is not taking care of us or listening and answering our prayers and that is why all this is happening and blame him. Do we ever think about the uncountable blessings he has showered upon us? Never!!! We always turn away from Christ when we are going through a lot of pain and sorrow as we think he is not there anymore. But that is completely wrong. He is very much present. There is a saying by DeMarcus Cousins which goes like this, “God gives his hardest battles to his toughest soldiers.”
We need to remember that life is not a bed of roses always and we all go through ups and downs and life is tough. We all go through a lot but it’s up to us to appreciate our blessings and come out of a tough situation by being tough and fighting to get out of it even with all the scars and bruises it has left us with.
Willie Nelson said, “When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around." We need to learn that in life we all have to go through pain, sorrow, trials, temptations. But at the same time in life not everything is doom and gloom. We also have joys and a whole lot of blessings which we need to be thankful about always.
Often in life when everything around us is a mess and is falling apart, we forget about all the blessings that have been endowed upon us. Above all we should never forget that life is blessing and be thankful to God. Every day we go to bed and are able to wake up to see another day and enjoy it. I would say live life to the fullest and enjoy every single moment. Live each moment as the last one and be thankful and grateful for all the blessings that God has bestowed in your life.
We have been truly blessed by God. Every day when I see the food in my table, I am grateful and thankful to the farmers who grew the food that is on my table, but above all I am thankful to God that I have food in my table as there are millions of people around the world who don’t have a meal. Similarly, I count my blessings when I think of my career as there are so many in this world who are unemployed. I am grateful to God as I have a place to call home and sleep, but there are so many in this world who are homeless and others who have had to leave their homes and roam around the globe as refugees due to war, and terror. Never take life granted but always be thankful, grateful, and always count your blessings as God has blessed each one of abundantly. We should never ever forget that and should be thankful.
Finally, I want to leave you with a quote by L. Lionel Kendrick which says “Life is not always easy to live, but the opportunity to do so is a blessing beyond comprehension. In the process of living, we will face struggles, many of which will cause us to suffer and to experience pain.”
Life is a true blessing which is a gift from God and it’s up to us to live every minute as we do not know what tomorrow has in store for us. We need to learn to appreciate each moment and live life to the fullest and seize every opportunity we are given and be thankful and grateful and above all count every little blessing bestowed upon us by God.
